Katie's Recipe Notes
Did you know Starbucks charges an extra $1.25 just to add cold foam to your drink? Once you see how quick and easy it is to make at home, you’ll realize how much you can save. Plus, making it at home means you can customize the sweetness and flavor exactly how you like it.
Starbucks Vanilla Sweet Cream Cold Foam is one of the most popular coffee toppings—and for good reason. It’s smooth, creamy, and adds just the right touch of sweetness to your iced coffee.
Starbucks makes their cold foam with a base of vanilla sweet cream—a simple blend of heavy cream, 2% milk, and vanilla syrup. When you froth it, it transforms into a light, pourable foam that gently cascades into your cold brew.
This recipe is scaled for just one drink, giving you the perfect amount of cold foam when you want it—no need to make a big batch.
But if you’d rather have a larger batch of vanilla sweet cream ready to go for the week, I’ve got you covered! See my full Vanilla Sweet Cream recipe here.
Why Cold Foam Works So Well For Cold Coffee Drinks
Cold foam is designed to sit on top of cold drinks, giving you that first creamy taste without needing to stir. It’s thinner than whipped cream but still adds that smooth, velvety texture.
Ingredients You'll Need

- Heavy Cream: Heavy whipping cream or whipping cream.
- 2% Milk: Whole milk works as well.
- Vanilla Simple Syrup: I have a recipe for a Copycat starbucks vanilla syrup—which is simple to make with granulated sugar, water, and vanilla extract—but you can use store-bought, if you have a brand you like.
*See recipe card below for ingredient quantities.
Can I Make It Dairy-Free?
Yes! Use a plant-based cream, like Silk heavy whipping cream alternative, and oat milk for the best frothing. Soy milk or almond milk can work too, but they won’t create as rich of a foam.
Flavor Variations
To change the flavor of the sweet cream foam, simply swap out the vanilla flavor syrup for another flavor. Use one of my homemade syrups or your favorite bottle from the grocery store! Try these flavors:
- Brown Sugar Cinnamon
- Caramel Syrup
- Pumpkin Spice Sauce makes a pumpkin cream cold foam!
Equipment
For the best results you'll need a handheld milk frother or an electric milk frother with a cold foam setting.
If you don’t have a frother, a French press or even a tightly sealed jar works too!
Instructions

- Step 1: Pour the heavy cream, milk, and vanilla syrup into a mason jar or small cup.

- Step 2: Use a handheld milk frother to whip the mixture until it’s light, airy, and still pourable—about 20–30 seconds.
Pour the cold foam over your iced coffee or make a vanilla sweet cream cold brew! Sip and enjoy your creamy morning coffee!
No Frother?
Use a jar that seals tightly and shake it vigorously until foamy. It takes a little effort but works in a pinch! The foam may be a bit looser, but still delicious.

Top Recipe Tips
- Start with cold ingredients. Cold cream and milk froth best.
- Don’t over-froth. Aim for a light foam—too much and you'll end up with whipped cream. This can happen very quickly, so keep an eye on it!
- Adjust the sweetness. Add a splash more syrup if you like it sweeter.
- Use it right away. Cold foam is best enjoyed fresh!
- To stir or not? Some people swear you shouldn’t stir the cold foam and let it cascade through your drink naturally. I say, do whatever makes you happy!

Recipe FAQs
Not quite. Cold foam is light and pourable, while whipped cream is thicker and designed to hold its shape.
Cold foam is best used right away! If you want to prep ahead, make and store the sweet cream base in the fridge for up to 5 days and froth just before serving.
They’re made from the same base! Sweet cream is the liquid version, used like a creamer. Cold foam is frothed into a light, creamy foam that sits on top of your drink.
Cold foam is a fluffy foam made for cold drinks—it’s designed to sit on top without melting right away. While you can add it to a hot drink, it will dissolve more quickly into the coffee, giving you a creamy taste just without the signature foam layer.
You can, but it’s not my first choice. It is too powerful and may not work as well as a handheld frother with this small amount of cream.
